Vancouver, BC (December 6, 2010): Dr. Kellogg Booth, Scientific Director, GRAND NCE welcomed the addition of Wavefront Wireless Commercialization Centre (WWCC) to Canada’s digital media landscape. Announced today by the federal government, the new Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR) will focus on growing the country’s wireless ecosystem.

A robust wireless economy is a good fit with GRAND’s vision to further develop and enhance Canada’s position as a global leader in new media, animation and games – all of which are interconnected with wireless applications and services.

“Mobile applications enabled by wireless technology are a promising component of digital media and a natural fit for many of the research activities in GRAND,” explained Dr. Kellogg Booth, Scientific Director, GRAND. “Increased partnership between WWCC and GRAND will lead to an environment where digital media and wireless foundations can grow and prosper.”

Among the many synergies to be explored, the two Centres of Excellence will:

  • Convert academic research in graphics, animation and new media with wireless applications into commercial products and services
  • Accelerate commercialization of Canadian technologies developed under GRAND’s research program through access to WWCC’s connections to venture capital and business opportunities
  • Coordinate access to and placement of highly qualified personnel in order to retain expertise in Canada
  • Cohost events related to digital media and wireless service

WWCC will complement GRAND’s contribution of research and expertise, as well as partner with GRAND’S host university, the University of British Columbia, twenty-six other academic institutions plus industry advocates such as Ericsson, Nokia, Sierra Wireless and a robust community of smaller wireless companies.

As the worldwide market for the wireless industry approaches $1 trillion, there is a tremendous amount of potential to be explored and realized.
